How to Prepare for a Summer Road Trip: 7 Car Care Tips Before You Hit the Road

There’s nothing like a summer road trip—the open road, the sunshine, the playlists, and the memories waiting to be made. But before you load the snacks and crank up the A/C, take a moment to make sure your vehicle is ready to go the distance.

At Sun Valley Auto Repair in Sugarcreek, OH , we want to help you travel safely and stress-free. Here’s our guide on how to prepare your car for a summer road trip:

1. Check Your Fluids

Before you drive hundreds of miles, be sure all your vehicle’s fluids are topped off and clean:
Engine oil – is it due for a change?
Coolant/antifreeze – essential for preventing overheating
Brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid

We’ll check them all during a road trip inspection at our shop.

2. Test Your Battery

Summer heat can actually be harder on your car battery than winter cold. If your battery is more than 3 years old, it’s a good idea to have it tested to avoid any surprise no-starts while you're on the road.

3. Inspect Your Tires

Good tires are crucial for a safe trip. Before hitting the highway:
Check tire pressure (including the spare!)
Look for signs of uneven wear or damage
Ensure tread depth is still safe for all conditions

A tire rotation or alignment may be in order, and we’re here to help with that.

4. Make Sure Your Brakes Are Ready

If your brakes are squeaking, grinding, or feeling soft—it’s time to have them checked. Safe braking is essential, especially when navigating through traffic, hills, or sudden stops on unfamiliar roads.

5. Test Your Air Conditioning

You don’t want to discover your A/C isn’t working halfway through your drive on a 90° day. If the cabin takes too long to cool down or the airflow feels weak, get it inspected before you leave.

6. Lights, Wipers & Washer Fluid

Visibility is everything when you’re driving through rain or into the setting sun. Make sure all lights (headlights, brake lights, blinkers) are functioning, and that your windshield wipers are in good condition.

7. Emergency Kit & Essentials

Make sure your vehicle is stocked with:
Jumper cables
Tire inflator or sealant
First aid kit
Flashlight
Water and snacks
Phone charger

If you’re traveling with kids or pets, don’t forget their travel essentials too!

Bonus Tip: Schedule a Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

Want peace of mind before your trip? Schedule a pre-trip inspection with our trusted techs at Sun Valley Auto Repair . We’ll check everything from brakes and tires to fluids and filters, so you can hit the road with confidence.
