This past week, Sun Valley Auto Repair had the pleasure of participating in Holmes County Life Skills Day 2024! Hosted for the Junior and Senior students of Hiland and West Holmes High Schools, this event was a fantastic opportunity to share essential car care skills that these young adults can carry with them for life. From oil checks to tire pressure basics, we aimed to empower the students with practical knowledge and confidence to manage their vehicles safely and responsibly.

Why Car Care Skills Matter

For many high school students, getting a driver’s license is a major milestone. However, knowing how to drive is only part of responsible vehicle ownership. Regular car maintenance not only ensures safety on the road but also helps to prolong the life of the vehicle and avoid costly repairs down the line. At Sun Valley Auto Repair, we believe in supporting our community by providing education that helps young drivers feel confident about taking care of their vehicles.

What We Covered

During Life Skills Day, we set up interactive stations where students could get hands-on experience with some of the most important car maintenance tasks. Here’s a quick rundown of what we covered:

  • Checking Oil Levels: We taught students how to use the oil dipstick to check their car’s oil level and discussed why regular oil checks and changes are essential for engine health.

  • Tire Pressure and Tread Depth: Understanding tire pressure is key to fuel efficiency, safety, and tire lifespan. Students learned to use a tire gauge and even practiced checking their own tire tread depth.

  • Battery Basics: Car batteries can be a mystery for new drivers. We showed students how to inspect for corrosion on battery terminals and explained the signs of a low battery, like dim lights or slow cranking.

  • Windshield Wipers and Fluid: Good visibility is crucial, especially in adverse weather. We demonstrated how to check wiper blades for wear and top off windshield washer fluid.

Hands-On Learning: Building Confidence Through Practice

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the students roll up their sleeves and try these tasks themselves. At each station, they had the chance to check tire pressure, practice using an oil dipstick, and see where to check fluid levels. This hands-on experience made it easier for them to understand each task and feel more confident about performing these checks in real-life situations.

Troubleshooting and Safety Tips

In addition to regular maintenance, we also shared tips on what to do in common roadside scenarios. From changing a flat tire to handling an overheating engine, the students learned practical steps they can take to stay safe. We emphasized the importance of knowing when it’s best to call for roadside assistance or a mechanic, and when they might be able to handle the issue themselves.
