In Ohio, if your wipers are on, your headlights must be too. Learn why this law exists and how it keeps everyone safer on the road during rain, fog, and snow.

Wipers On, Lights On: What Ohio Drivers Need to Know About Driving in the Rain

When the skies open up and rain starts to pour, most drivers instinctively flip on their windshield wipers. But did you know that in Ohio, turning on your headlights is just as important—and required by law?

According to Ohio Revised Code §4513.03, if your windshield wipers are on due to weather conditions, your headlights must also be on . This applies during rain, snow, sleet, hail, and fog —any time visibility is reduced. It doesn’t matter if it’s the middle of the day. If your wipers are on, your lights should be too.

Why Is This Law Important?

When it’s raining, visibility isn’t just tough for you—it’s harder for everyone else to see you too. Headlights help other drivers spot your vehicle through the mist, glare, or spray from the road. It’s a simple step that dramatically increases safety for everyone on the road.

And no, those automatic daytime running lights don’t count. In many vehicles, the rear lights don’t activate with daytime running lights—making it even harder for other drivers to see you from behind in rainy conditions.

What Happens If You Don’t Turn Your Headlights On?

Ignoring this rule could result in a traffic citation—not to mention increase your risk of an accident. It's a quick and easy habit that can help prevent a costly and dangerous mistake.
