Brake Safety: What You Need to Know to Keep Your Vehicle Safe

Your brakes are one of the most important safety systems in your vehicle. Whether you’re slowing down to make a turn, stopping at a red light, or coming to a quick halt in an emergency, your brakes have one job: keep you safe.

But brakes don’t last forever. They wear down slowly over time, and the signs that they need attention often start small. Knowing what to look for — and when to get your brakes inspected — can help prevent unsafe driving conditions, expensive repairs, or worse, an accident.

Let's walk through what brake wear looks like, how often your brakes should be checked, and how we help our customers feel confident and informed about their brake service needs.

How Do I Know When My Brakes Need to Be Checked?

Your vehicle may give you early signals that something’s not quite right. Here are the most common signs:

Squeaking or Squealing Sounds:
This is often the first warning sign. Brake pads have wear indicators that intentionally make noise to alert you it’s time for service.
Grinding Noise:
If you hear grinding, your brake pads may be worn down completely, and metal components may be rubbing together. This means the problem is more urgent.
Vibration When Braking:
If the steering wheel or brake pedal shakes when you press the brakes, your rotors may be warped or uneven.
Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal:
This could indicate air in the brake lines or a brake fluid issue — both of which can affect braking performance.
Increased Stopping Distance:
If it takes longer to stop than it used to, it’s time for an inspection.
Brake Light on the Dashboard:
Your vehicle is asking to be checked. Don’t ignore this one.

How Often Should Brakes Be Inspected?

We recommend having your brakes professionally inspected at least once a year or every 12,000–15,000 miles , depending on how and where you drive.

But if you notice any of the signs above — don’t wait.

Why Brake Safety Matters So Much

Worn or damaged brake components don’t just affect stopping power — they impact the safety of:

You, Your passengers, Other drivers on the road, and/or Pedestrians and cyclists

Your brakes are something you never want to push “just a little longer.” A simple inspection can prevent dangerous situations and more costly repairs down the road.
