Is Your Car Making a Clicking Noise? Here's What We'd Check First

There are few things more frustrating than hearing a new noise from your vehicle—especially when you can't figure out where it's coming from.

One of the questions we hear all the time at Sun Valley Auto Repair is:

"My car is making a clicking noise. Is it something serious?"

The honest answer is...maybe.

A clicking noise can be something simple, like a small rock caught behind a brake shield. It can also be the first warning sign of a worn CV axle, failing wheel bearing, brake problem, or even low engine oil.

The important thing is when you hear the noise.

That's one of the first questions we ask every customer because it helps narrow down where to start looking.

If it clicks while turning...

A clicking noise during a sharp turn often points us toward the front axle. We commonly find worn CV joints that have lost grease after the protective boot tears. Left alone, that small clicking noise can eventually turn into a vehicle that won't move under its own power.

If it clicks when you're trying to start it...

Most people immediately think they need a starter.

Sometimes they're right—but many times they're not.

We've diagnosed plenty of vehicles where the real culprit was a weak battery, corroded battery terminals, or a charging system issue. That's why we test the entire starting and charging system before recommending parts.

If it clicks while braking...

Brake noises should never be ignored.

The cause might be as simple as loose hardware, but we've also found worn brake pads, damaged rotors, and sticking calipers that needed immediate attention. The sooner they're inspected, the more likely you are to avoid additional damage.

If it clicks while driving over bumps...

This usually sends us toward the steering and suspension system. Worn sway bar links, ball joints, tie rod ends, and other suspension components can all create clicking or clunking noises as the vehicle moves over uneven roads.

What should you do?

You don't have to know exactly what's making the noise—that's our job.

What you can do is pay attention to a few details before bringing your vehicle in:

  • Does it happen only when turning?
  • Does it happen while braking?
  • Does it happen over bumps?
  • Is it getting louder?
  • Did it start suddenly or gradually?

Those answers help us diagnose the problem more efficiently.

Our Advice

Vehicle noises rarely fix themselves.

Sometimes you'll come in and we'll tell you everything looks good. Other times we'll find a small problem before it turns into a major repair.

Either way, you'll receive a Digital Vehicle Inspection with photos, a clear explanation of what we found, and honest recommendations so you can make the decision that's right for you.

If your vehicle has started making a clicking noise, we'd be happy to take a look and help you get back on the road with confidence.

Schedule your vehicle inspection today and let us get you back on the road safely.
