Winter Snow Safety: How to Stay Safe on Ohio Roads This Winter

Below are essential winter snow safety tips every driver in Holmes County should know, plus answers to common questions we hear at the shop.

Slow Down—Snow and Ice Reduce Traction

When snow blankets the roads, the number one rule is simple: slow down . Even with four-wheel drive or AWD, icy surfaces reduce your vehicle’s ability to grip the road.
Driving slower gives you more control — and more time to react.

Increase Your Following Distance

In dry conditions, a three-second following distance is enough.
In winter?
Double it — or even triple it.
Stopping distances increase dramatically on icy pavement, so give yourself room to breathe.

Clear All Windows, Mirrors, and Lights

Before leaving the driveway:

✔️ Remove snow from all windows
✔️ Clear headlights and taillights
✔️ Knock snow off your roof (for your safety and the driver behind you)

Clear visibility is one of the simplest ways to stay safe.

Watch for Black Ice (Especially on Bridges)

Black ice forms when temperatures hover around freezing. It’s nearly invisible — and extremely dangerous. Be especially cautious on:

Bridges
Shaded areas
Curves
Rural backroads in Holmes and Tuscarawas County

If it looks wet but the temperature is below 32°F, assume it's ice.

Check Your Tires — Your First Line of Defense

Tires matter more in winter than almost anything else. Good tread and proper inflation give you better traction on slippery roads.

We recommend:

Minimum 4/32” tread for winter driving
Checking tire pressure weekly
Rotating tires every 6,000–10,000 miles
Considering snow-rated tires if you drive long distances or live on hilly backroads

Not sure where your tires stand? Bring your vehicle by Sun Valley Auto Repair — we’ll check them for you.

Keep a Winter Emergency Kit in Your Vehicle

A simple kit can make a big difference. Pack:

Blanket

Gloves

Flashlight

Phone charger

Ice scraper

Small shovel

Water and snacks

If you ever slide into a ditch or get stuck, you’ll be grateful you have it.

To keep your vehicle safe and reliable this winter, we recommend:

Tire inspection and rotation

Battery test (cold weather weakens batteries quickly)

Coolant and antifreeze check

Brake inspection

Wiper blade replacement

Top-off of washer fluid rated for freezing temps

These simple services keep your car ready for sudden snowstorms and freezing temperatures.

1. How do I know if my tires are safe for winter?

Look for at least 4/32” tread and check for uneven wear. If you're unsure, Sun Valley Auto Repair can measure and inspect your tires for free.

2. Should I warm up my car before driving in winter?

Yes — but only for 1–2 minutes . Modern engines don’t need long warm-ups. The best way to warm up your vehicle is to drive it gently.

3. What should I do if my car slides on ice?

Stay calm. Ease off the gas, don’t slam the brakes, and gently steer in the direction you want to go.

4. How often should I check my battery in winter?

At the start of the season and again mid-winter. Batteries lose power in cold temperatures, and most die without warning.

5. Does Sun Valley Auto Repair offer winter readiness checks?

Yes! We offer tire inspections, battery testing, coolant checks, wiper replacements, and full winter-prep services.

Winter driving doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right preparation — and a reliable team behind you — you can drive with confidence all season long.

If you’d like your vehicle checked before the next snowfall, we’re here to help.
