As late November settles into Ohio, the weather begins to shift quickly. Frosty mornings, wet roads, and the early signs of winter make tire safety more important than ever. At Sun Valley Auto Repair in Sugarcreek, we see more tire issues between November and February than any other time of year. Since your tires are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road, their condition directly affects how safely you stop, steer, and drive on icy or slushy roads.

Winter driving in Holmes and Tuscarawas Counties brings slippery surfaces, hidden black ice, wet leaves that act like ice, and sudden temperature drops. These conditions reduce traction and increase braking distance. Healthy, properly inflated tires are one of the most important ways to stay safe on the road during the winter months.

Tread depth has a major impact on traction. Worn-out tread prevents your tires from gripping the road and pushing snow, slush, or water away from underneath the tire. In winter, it’s best to have at least 5/32" of tread. Less than that means your tires may struggle on icy or snowy roads. If you’re not sure how much tread you have left, stop by Sun Valley Auto Repair and we’ll measure it for you.

As temperatures drop, so does your tire pressure. For every 10-degree temperature decrease, your tires can lose approximately one PSI. Low tire pressure reduces traction and causes your tires to wear faster. In late fall and winter, it’s a good idea to check your tire pressure every couple of weeks or whenever the temperature drops suddenly. If you're out and about, we’re always happy to check it for you.

All-season tires can handle mild winter driving, but winter tires are designed specifically for icy, snowy, and slushy roads. They offer better grip, improved stopping power, and more control in harsh conditions. In rural parts of Ohio—especially the hills and backroads of Sugarcreek, Walnut Creek, Millersburg, and Berlin—winter tires can make a noticeable difference in safety.

Winter driving is safer when your tires wear evenly. Rotating your tires helps all four wheels maintain consistent traction. Most manufacturers recommend a rotation every 6,000 to 10,000 miles. If you haven’t rotated your tires since summer, this is the perfect time to schedule one.

Cold weather can make existing tire issues worse. Cracks, vibration, slow leaks, or sidewall damage can turn into bigger problems once winter conditions arrive. If something feels off while driving, have your tires inspected sooner rather than later. We offer free tire inspections for anyone who wants winter peace of mind.

Sun Valley Auto Repair offers a Tire Care Package with every tire purchase. It includes free flat repairs, complimentary rotations, balancing when needed, road hazard protection, up to 110% replacement coverage early in the tire’s life, and protection for up to five years. For Ohio winters, it’s one of the best ways to protect your tire investment.

How often should tire pressure be checked in winter?
Checking every two weeks is ideal. Cold weather reduces PSI quickly.

What tread depth is safest for winter?
While 2/32" is the legal minimum, 5/32" is recommended for winter driving.

Do I really need winter tires in Ohio?
You don’t have to use them, but they offer much better traction and safety on icy and snowy roads.

How do I know if my tires need replaced?
If your tires feel slippery, vibrate while driving, show cracks, or have shallow tread, it’s time to have them inspected.

How often should tires be rotated?
Typically every 6,000 to 10,000 miles. This helps with even tread wear and safer handling in winter.

Does Sun Valley sell and install tires?
Yes. We offer all major brands and provide a comprehensive Tire Care Package for added protection.

If you're unsure whether your tires are winter-ready, now is the perfect time for an inspection, rotation, or replacement. Our team is here to help you drive safely through the cold months ahead.
