Car Care 101: Teaching Real-World Automotive Skills at Holmes County Life Skills Camp

In November 2025, our team at Sun Valley Auto Repair had the privilege of participating in the Holmes County Life Skills Camp, where we spent the morning teaching Car Care 101 to students from West Holmes and Hiland High Schools.

This event is one of our favorites every year because it connects us directly with the next generation of drivers—and gives them hands-on, practical skills that genuinely matter once they get behind the wheel.

At Sun Valley, our mission has always been about more than fixing cars. We’re passionate about education, safety, and helping people understand their vehicles, so they feel confident and in control. That’s exactly what this workshop was all about.

What We Taught: Car Care Basics Every Young Driver Should Know

Whether someone is brand new to driving or has been cruising for a few years, these foundational skills make a huge difference in safety, confidence, and long-term vehicle health.

✔ How to Check Tire Pressure

Students learned how cold weather affects tire pressure, why proper inflation matters, and how to use a tire gauge. We also explained how badly worn or underinflated tires impact safety—especially during Ohio winters.

✔ Oil Level Checks

We taught the simple step-by-step process for checking engine oil and why staying on top of oil levels is essential to protecting the engine from damage.

✔ Understanding Warning Lights

Dashboard lights can be intimidating. We covered the most common alerts—brake, battery, check engine, tire pressure—and explained which ones mean stop now versus schedule a service soon.

✔ Basic Vehicle Walkaround Inspection

Students participated in a quick “pre-drive checklist,” including checking lights, wipers, tires, and general visibility.

✔ Why Routine Maintenance Matters

We talked about what regular vehicle maintenance really does—improves safety, prevents breakdowns, saves money long-term, and keeps cars running smoothly.

Hands-On Learning Makes a Difference

The highlight of the morning was watching the students jump in, try the tools, ask questions, and genuinely engage. Hands-on learning is powerful—especially with something as important as vehicle safety.

And yes… Glenn the Sasquatch even made the cut in a few conversations, proving once again that automotive education doesn’t have to be boring.

Why We Invest in Local Students

As a family-owned shop here in Sugarcreek, Ohio, community involvement isn’t just something we do—it’s who we are. Teaching at the Life Skills Camp gives us the opportunity to:

Support local schools
Empower new drivers
Build confidence in young adults
Share real-world knowledge
Give back to the community we love

These students are the future of our community, and we’re honored to play even a small part in their journey.

FAQ: Car Care 101 for New Drivers

1. What are the top three things a new driver should know?

Tire pressure, oil levels, and dashboard warning lights. These three areas prevent the majority of avoidable breakdowns.

2. How often should teens check their tires?

At least once per month—and before long road trips. Cold weather can cause rapid pressure drops.

3. What warning light can you not ignore?

The oil pressure, temperature warning, or flashing check engine light. These all indicate possible serious issues.

4. What maintenance should a new driver schedule regularly?

Oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and annual alignment checks. Staying ahead saves money and keeps the vehicle safe.

Partnering With Schools Makes Our Community Stronger

We’re grateful for the invitation to join the Holmes County Life Skills Camp once again. Our team walked away inspired by the students’ curiosity and excited to continue helping young drivers learn how to take care of their vehicles.
